Title: Research - Technology - Industry

Affiliation: Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM, Heidenhofstraße 8, 79110 Freiburg, Germany; University of Freiburg, Institute of Microsystems Engineering, Georges-Köhler-Allee 102, 79110 Freiburg, Germany

Abstract: The mission of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft is to turn scientific discoveries into industrial innovations. Since only about one third of the funding of Fraunhofer comes directly from the government, there is the need to focus on topics that are relevant for collaborative publicly funded research programs and to generate later from the accumulated knowledge direct industry grants. This model works, Fraunhofer has seen a strong growth, now with 22.000 dedicated people working for Fraunhofer and with a total annual budget exceeding 2 billion Euros. However, to be successful with bridging the worlds of academia and industry, some basic rules have to be fulfilled. The talk will cover the topics of fair contracts, generation and usage of IP, and selection of the right topics to work on. Furthermore, besides sharing general experiences, some practical examples will be given, where indeed research led to technology that became crucial for partners in industry. The standard MP3 and the white LEDs as well as fat-free sausages and a new laser technology will be highlighted.
