Title: Development of Silicon Drift Detectors and recent applications

Affiliation: Politecnico di Milano, Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria and INFN, Sezione di Milano

Abstract: Since the invention of Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) almost 30 years go by Gatti and Rehak as two dimensional position-sensitive detectors for ionizing particles we have assisted to a substantial evolution in detector technology, architecture and performance. As a consequence SDDs are being employed as particle tracking detectors in high-energy physics experiments, are worldwide spread as spectroscopic detectors in scientific and industrial applications, and further open to novel application fields. The talk will review the main topologies and performance of SDDs for spectoscopy and position sensing for particle tracking as well as novel SDD architectures that extend the potential of Silicon Drift Detectors to X- and Gamma-ray imaging with high energy- and time-resolution as well as to high resolution Compton electrons' tracking. Interesting applications in works of art investigation, material analyses and nanomedicine will be presented.
