Ravenna Technopole

The Emilia-Romagna Region Operative Plan (POR) 2007-2013, founded by the European Structural Funds, has been dedicated to the development of a High Technology Regional Network of Technopoles to support Industrial Research.

Within the Ravenna Technopole, researchers from the Interdepartmental Center for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRSA) and the Interdepartmental Center for Industrial Research – Energy Environment (CIRI-EA) of the University of Bologna operate to develop new technologies and applications.

The Environmental Management Research Group is active in the fields of:

  • Sustainability: LCA of plants and processes in the bio-based business sector, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) scheme, GHG savings according to Dir. 2009/28/CE applied to bioenergy projects and plants.
  • Legislative compliancy: Consultancy about authorizations and permit procedures.
  • Risk analysis and assessment: Environmental economics, sustainable development, public finance, probabilistic causation, as well as at the intersection between science and law via causal analysis, cancer and other toxic effects from exposure to airborne and waterborne contaminants and microbiological agents.
  • Evaluation of value chains: sustainable biomass supply.
  • Innovation and technology diffusion: Organization of seminars and workshops, technological risk assessment.

The Analytical Pyrolysis Research Group is active in the fields of:

  • Analytical Chemistry: Development of analytical methods for the dermination of contaminants and industrial process monitoring.
  • Analytical Pyrolysis: Characterization of complex materials by flash pyrolysis combined to GC-MS. Study of behaviour of organic materials subjected to thermal processes. Micro-scale testing of pyrolysis, gasification and combustion.
  • Biofuels and Biochemicals: Chemical caracterization of materials (oil, tar, gas, char) derived from pyrolysis, gasification and hydrothermal treatment of organic material (biomass, wastes).
  • Biochar: Production and characterization of charcoal in soil applications, determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
  • Anaerobic Digestion: Analysis of inhibitory substances in anaerobic digestion, test of pre-treatment methods for biomass with low digestibility.
  • Hybrid thermo-bio conversion processes: Integration of thermochemical and biochemical conversion processes for the obtainment of fuels, chemicals and materials.
