The Fraunhofer Gesellschaft is Europe's largest research and development organization with a total of 22.000 employees. 66 individually operating Farunhofer institutes are spread through Germany. Further representations are also found in Europe and the USA.

The UMSICHT Institute branch in Sulzbach-Rosenberg and the newly established Center for Energy Storage are dedicated to the development of new environmentally friendly, sustainable technologies and their smart integration to support the German energy turnaround (»Energiewende«).
